Model Sara Candido-Velazquez

Tell us a bit about your story, did you always want to be a model?

My name is Sara Candido-Velazquez and I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I always loved fashion. My mother tells me all the time how she used to always dress me up and that I always had a watch, a little bag and sunglasses to go with the outfit. I think that it sparked my love for the industry. When I was 5 years old I remember being stopped by an agency at the mall. They wanted to invite me to be one of their models. I was so young, my mother didn't want to pressure me into making any decisions, and I ended up denying the invitation.

Why did you choose to pursue a career as a model?

I chose to pursue my career as a model in a transitional time in my life. I had gone through some tough times where I lost all confidence in myself. When the opportunity arose to get myself where I wanted to be, I remembered that invitation from many years ago and thought that it would be a great chance for me to get my confidence back.

What do you enjoy most about modelling?

There are many things about modeling that I like, but the thing I love the most is to be able to inspire women to love themselves first! To love their bodies and motivate them to achieve their dreams. Being a mother of two girls, I thought that my chances of having a career in the modeling industry were not possible. Being a model today gives me a purpose. It allows me to motivate other women, other moms and let them know that it is still possible.

Could you tell us a bit about the shoot that you have modelled for that is in our magazine? Does it’s meaning have any significance for you?

This shoot means a lot to me because these photos mark the beginning of something big. I had done many photoshoots previously, but I had a dream, a desire in my heart to get featured in a magazine. I didn't know which one, but I manifested that desire and I'm happy to see it coming true.

What is you biggest accomplishment so far?

I think every accomplishment is a big accomplishment. To see how my life changed, the art of every photo, the rush from a fashion show, or the success of a magazine publication are all big accomplishments that are shaping my career into something even bigger.

What do you hope to accomplish through modelling, do you have any big goals for the future?

My ultimate goal is to be able to give back to the community. Being a model to me is not just being pretty in front of the camera lens but to inspire others, motivate them to do better, and help those in need. I plan to get my message out through magazine publishings, fashion shows, and working with fashion brands.

If you could choose to work with anyone, your dream brand who would you want to model for?

If I could model for any brand, I would choose Chanel.

Are their any models you look up too the most?

One of the models I look up to is Camila Coelho. She inspires me because she, like myself, moved from Brazil to the USA very young and today influences people all over the world.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I think the industry has grown and improved a lot. One of the things I used to think back in the day was that I would never be able to be a model because of my height. Today there’s more acceptance. All shapes and sizes are welcomed.

What would be your dream shoot set up?

My dream shoot set up would definitely be on the streets of Paris.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

My manager Kiaraibelis Colon once said to me in conversation that I should always set my grounds and create boundaries. This is the best advice in this industry. No one can take advantage of another if there are grounds and boundaries established.

Do you have any tips for people who want to start in the modelling industry?

One tip I would give to someone who wants to start modeling is be humble. You might get paid very little, if anything. Don’t go into this for fame but because of the love for the art. It takes time and perseverance.
