Hey Kenya! What would you say first got you in to music?
I would say I got into music through plays at school and threw myself into musical theatre which I loved but wasn’t too keen on acting! I guess I slowly realised that I just wanted to do music and started writing songs on my keyboard at home and just fell in love with it!
Do you have a particular way for you creative process?
I wouldn’t say I have a particular process! I just start with some chords and slowly build up a beat on logic! I never really think too deeply about lyrics either it just sort of comes out naturally!
How would you describe the music you typically create?
I would describe my music as electronic with soul and rnb influences! I love adding heavy synths and pads with soft vocals and layers of harmonies!
If you could open a show for any artist who would that be?
It would have to be Banks! She is probably my favourite artist ever! I’ve been obsessed with her ever since I heard her first song!
Who would you most love to collaborate with and why?
There are so many artists I would love to collaborate with! Firstly NAO, her sound is so distinctive and she is so incredibly talented! Also Flume, I love his sound so much I feel like he created a whole genre, he’s always one step ahead of the curve with production and sound design!
If there was anything you could change about the industry what would that be?
I think the one thing I would want to change would be how women are treated! Although there’s been huge steps in the right direction I still think there is so much room for improvement on the journey of fighting sexism! The music world is known for exploiting female stars etc but I think it’s also time for more women producers, sound engineers, managers etc.
What do you feel like you biggest achievement to date is?
I feel like there are so many moments in my career so far I’m proud of! Releasing 3 singles as an independent artist! Being one of the winners of the isawitfirst competition, and probably best of all is getting to work with such incredible musicians, producers and managers!
Do you have a favourite song to perform?
I haven’t performed in so long, it feels like a life time ago! But I’ve been doing little live videos for Instagram etc and one of my favourite songs to sing and play would have to be my new single TALK!
Do you have any shows planned after lockdown?
I’m doing a YouTube live stream on the 25th Of July which I’m super excited about and I’m sure when the venues open again I’ll be doing a real gig ASAP!
We see your new single ‘Talk’ came out during lockdown, how do you feel you have kept your self motivated?
For the first half of lock down I was so motivated and excited about all this free time to be spending on music but after about a month or so I actually started finding it really hard, almost like I was running out of inspiration! But I watched lots of videos and tutorials and worked on trying new production techniques which really helped me keep motivated!
Whats next for you?
I’m super excited about what’s coming next! We've finally been able to get back in the studio to record vocals for the next project! I can’t wait for everyone to hear what we've been working on!
